A glow in the dark

By SuperyachtDesign. Feb 03, 2010

Samples of Lunabrite, the latest in light technology, just landed on the SYD news desk. Lunabrite is a solar-activated light strip that charges by either room or sunlight in 5-30 minutes and then continues to emit light for up to eight hours and is completely rechargeable. Its applications include emergency lighting, for negotiating steps and passerelles, as well as for onboard nightclubs and bars. The product uses no batteries, bulbs or wiring and while it is not as bright as wired LED lighting, it is lightweight and can be attached to almost any surface as it has no heat output. Lunabrite emits an accent glow in darkness, as opposed to reflecting light, and it does not illuminate the surrounding area. This is a durable product and has been successfully tested to last between eight and 15 years, while also standing up to tough outdoor conditions and salt water. It is also UV resistant, anti-microbial and non-toxic, allowing it to be safely used around children, pets and water.

"In both interior and exterior yacht designs, Lunabrite adds a cool, modern look", Barbara Sommer the general manager of Lunabrite informed SYD. “It also offers softly elegant illumination in darkness for way finding, improved night visibility or contour accents."

Currently the patent pending technology is produced in three sizes: small (3/16"), medium (5/16") and large (3/8"), and three colours: arctic blue, spring green and lime light. However, the colours are only visible in darkness; in natural light they are all off-white.
