Porcelain chandeliers from Diffuse

By SuperyachtDesign. Jan 02, 2010

Diffuse lighting is adapting their first translucent porcelain chandelier for the floating world. The soft hue cast by the translucent porcelain lighting from Diffuse is calm and gentle and suitable for any interior. By day the light shades are clean and ivory white, by night the light can be bright or dimmed to a candlelit warmth. The porcelain tiles become translucent when back-lit, offering an understated opulence. The practical beauty of this material is that it does not tarnish or burn and can be exposed to salt air. It is also easy to dust and clean with either soapy water or a lint-free cloth.

"On a moving yacht we would pin all our porcelain pieces top and bottom (the standard ones are only pinned at the top)", says Lucy Boatswain, Design Director at Diffuse. She goes on to describe further invisible details that make their chandeliers suitable for floating residences: "We would also run a bead of clear silicone down the back edges of each tile to ensure they did not rattle against the framework or against other tiles. We securely bolt each piece into position with self-locking fixings on the inside of the feature. Thus the chandeliers would need to be adapted slightly, but they would be secure for rough seas."

The Diffuse range of lighting adorns prestigious interiors worldwide and their lighting designers work closely with architects, clients and interior designers to create bespoke lighting pieces and features. They also have collections that can be combined to suit different spaces. The process of custom design begins with the client being sent samples of porcelain and care is taken that they then work within the design parameters so the lighting fits the space and is specified to electrical requirements. The standard bulbs are low-energy dimmable compact fluorescents so brightness can be managed. The use of LEDs is also becoming an option.
