SuperyachtDesign Q1 is Launched

By SuperyachtDesign. Dec 08, 2009

Last night around 200 movers and shakers in the design and product segments of the superyacht industry attended the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, London, for the launch of the first edition of the Superyacht Design quarterly book, Q1. In attendance were many luminaries from the world of superyacht design, including Terence Disdale, Ken Freivokh, Dickie Bannenberg and Simon Rowell, Mark Berryman, Adam Lay and Evan Marshall, to name just a few.

The evening's main event began with a presentation from Martin H. Redmayne, Chariman of The Yacht Report Group (TYRG), Justin Ratcliffe, Editor of SuperyachtDesign (SYD), Charlotte Kemp, SYD's Commercial Manager and John Mitchell, Head of Digital Media at TYRG. Together they outlined the vision and philosophy of this new multi-media platform before answering questions from the audience. To create an air of expectancy, the book was presented to a hushed audience halfway through the proceedings and they were captivated by the brand new hard-backed, quarterly publication.

The first edition, free to view online later this week at SuperyachtDesign.com, provides an insight into what is to follow in 2010. SuperyachtDesign is not only challenging in terms of layout and graphic design, it will also push the boundaries of reporting on the world of large yacht design.

Incisively written and presented, the online site will provide superyacht design studios and naval architects with a single platform to exhibit their skills, creativity and flair to a wide yet focused audience.  The website acts to either back up their own online presence, or simply give them a stylish and well-marketed online presence where they may not have previously had a chance to develop one.

These online profiles, also available to product designers and material suppliers to the industry, are supported by the editorial team with relevant and opinionated design stories and news updates.  The quarterly book, on the other hand, benefits from Justin’s editorial expertise and experience to delve deeper into specific aspects of the design world, investigating how each and every facet of a superyacht is conceived and realised in the final build project. Every design viewpoint - from the outfitter's to the end-user's, the owner's and crew's - is taken into account. In this way, by improving education and understanding among individuals, communication is enhanced, which in turn can only lead to a better product.

A champagne reception followed to celebrate the launch of SuperyachtDesign. This was an excellent opportunity to gauge the initial reaction to the website and book. Following the launch Justin said: "The response from leading designers was enthusiastic and encouraging and they are committed to working with us in the future. Last night’s presentation was confirmation we are on the right track."  John supported this sentiment: “The feedback has been tremendous tonight. The Group has endeavoured to produce good quality work across the portfolio – strong facts supported by strong insight and opinions – and, through our strong ties to the design world, will be reporting on what matters most to them and their audience even more with this new venture.”

Whilst effectively free for 2009 and the initial launch period, SuperyachtDesign is a subscription based product.  From January, 2010 the quarterly book and main aspects of the website will only be available to subscribers to SuperyachtDesign.  For those wanting to take advantage of The Yacht Report Group’s Christmas spirit, a special launch promotion is being offered to anyone who wants to purchase a subscription now (the subscription will officially commence from January 2010 to January 2011).

Feedback from industry luminaries following the launch of SuperyachtDesign:

"A fresh and much needed initiative." (Ken Freivokh, Ken Freivokh Design)

"I have had a look through the book and there are lots of articles I want to read, the content is excellent." (Peder Eidsgaard, Eidsgaard Design )

“There was a good buzz and people enjoyed the fact that it is a different approach to a publication. I like the idea that it hangs around longer than a monthly magazine and the content is more in-depth and can be used as a reference.” (Toby Ecuyer - Redman Whitley Dixon)

“I think the event was really useful and I hope that it is something that continues. As a networking opportunity I believe it could become important to the industry.” (Jamie Horton, Harlequin Tabletop)

“The new quarterly is particularly well presented: a real breath of fresh air. I sincerely hope to see the new platform grow to become a desperately needed benchmark and reference point in Yacht Design media.” (Simon Rowell, Bannenberg & Rowell Design)
