APPLE: Loving great innovation into existence.

STEVE JOBS - the name resonates inside the design culture. Perhaps you’re even reading these words on an Apple device. The superyacht sector has certainly been affected by Steve’s work, and I’d like to take a quick look into what that...

INSPIRATION: FRIEND OR FOE?

INSPIRATION - it is the key to so much, but difficult to quantify and even more difficult to capture. How do we pursue it, and how do we protect it once we find it? In this space I am going to try and tackle these questions and others that relate to ...

INNOVATION: Who is Responsible?

I recently spoke at an event focused on design about how some of the regulations our industry is facing will affect the way we design yachts. I won't bore you with the details or technicalities, but I feel compelled to share an observation: in the discussions that followed, we weren't speaking about how the regulations would affect our ability to innovate — we were effectively fixated on how the rules would affect our ability to keep doing things the same way we've been doing them...Do you see the problem there? We need catalysts to move us toward where the world is headed next, not the coddling needed to keep it all the same — sure, the ideal catalyst for forward movement is an aggressive and adventuresome client, but those are hard to track down, and often even harder to hold on to. I believe instead, that we, as the "Creatives" in the picture, need to be creative in arenas beyond just design. If a few intelligent, creative minds pull together, there are niches in the yachting world that can be leveraged by the right people and I believe that some of those people, and people who know those people, may be reading this very sentence.

No matter your opinion on the state of things, I just ask that you consider for a moment where you have personally pushed forward the line of the expected, into the unexpected. Where have you taken a worthy risk? Where have you fought for something? Do you understand cross-pollination (www.copyblogger.com/cross-pollination)? Interdisciplinarity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interdisciplinarity)? Professionals in the 21st century should. I know we are all very busy, and up to our eyeballs with pressure, deadlines, and the simple need to survive one day to the next, but these ideas can help change that.

I challenge each of you to take a few moments in the in between — a flight somewhere, a drive, a weekend, even your coffee break — to consider a broader picture and see if you can see some of the forest for the trees. Stop the excuses, identify an opportunity, find a new answer....and TRY it.

I really appreciate your point. If we are going to sell human kind on the concept of change, we will have to sneak up on something really huge. Let's help unbind them from the fear of change and help them to LIVE. Comfort and sameness are some of the enemies we all share. infinity beckons.

I agree- the paralyzing element of fear is highly underestimated.
